Hemorrhoids

What are hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids are a very common condition that can cause pain, burning, bleeding, and a feeling of pressure in the anus. Although the symptoms are caused by dilated blood vessels in the anus, Chinese medicine treats the entire body as a whole, and so does the treatment. The treatment does not include acupuncture in the anus, but acupuncture at points around the navel, on the hands and feet in order to remotely affect the anus. I learned the treatment approach that involves acupuncture in remote areas of the body in order to affect the anus from a Chinese-Taiwanese doctor: Dr. Tan. This approach has been supplemented by over 17 years of therapeutic experience in treating hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids can cause great discomfort, so it is important for me to emphasize that in most cases, you can feel an improvement in symptoms after just two treatments.
Common symptoms are:
-
Pain or a feeling of pressure
-
Bleeding in the stool
-
Itching or burning
-
Local swelling
What does hemorrhoid treatment look like?
Treatment includes:
-
Acupuncture at points distant from the area
-
Dietary adjustment according to the principles of Chinese medicine and the patient's personal diagnosis
-
Lifestyle recommendations
What do the studies say about Chinese medicine as a treatment for hemorrhoids?
The existing studies examined the effectiveness of acupuncture for relieving pain after hemorrhoid surgery. There are currently no high-quality studies examining the effectiveness of acupuncture for treating hemorrhoids themselves.
In December 2022, a review of studies was published in the medical journal Medicine (Baltimore). The review examined five studies that included follow-up of 465 people who had hemorrhoid surgery. The aim of the studies was to examine whether acupuncture has a beneficial effect on relieving pain after hemorrhoid surgery. The results of the study demonstrated that people who received acupuncture suffered significantly less pain in the anal area compared to people who did not receive acupuncture after surgery.
