ירקות שורש וההשפעה על מערכת העיכול

An article for Chinese medicine practitioners:

I planned to write what I'm writing now yesterday, but it's hard to sit down for 10 minutes straight and write something in this current time (kids, Zoom, alarms and news...). I'm sure you can relate.

Precisely because of this difficulty we are all experiencing, I think we need to pay even more attention than usual to incorporating foods that strengthen our soil into our diet and recommending these foods to our patients.

Today I want to dive a little into Chinese knowledge about root vegetables.

As you know, according to Chinese medicine, the effect of food on the body and mind is determined by the shape of the food, its texture, its color, the temperature at which it is grown, and also the place where it is grown.

Root vegetables (carrots, potatoes, celery root, parsley root, etc.) grow in the soil, below the surface of the ground, and therefore, according to Chinese medicine, they strengthen the elements of water and earth.

Not all root vegetables are suitable for those who suffer from digestive problems. Vegetables like onions, garlic, and kohlrabi, which we would expect to aid digestion due to their pungency, cause most people to experience gas, bloating, and abdominal discomfort.

You can eat these vegetables, but it is better to eat them in small quantities and after they have undergone some heating (i.e. do not add raw onions to the salad).

Even a large amount of sweet potato will not be suitable for someone who has moisture (frequent bowel movements, soft stools, tenesmus, etc.), but other root vegetables are excellent for calming, strengthening the sense of stability and calm, and also for the digestive system.

I'm attaching a link to a root vegetable antipasti recipe that I really like: https://did.li/2Owx5

I recommend omitting the soy and kohlrabi in the recipe (soy causes gas and is not suitable for those with sensitive intestines. It is really possible to do without it. It still turns out great) and reducing the amounts of garlic, onion and sugar.

You can also make root vegetable puree, but it is more suitable in the winter (relatively heavy but goes well with the digestive system).

Enjoy your meal and may there be peaceful days and good news. To join a quiet WhatsApp group for Chinese medicine practitioners with information on treating digestive problems, click here: https://chat.whatsapp.com/KaELEaty18M50is5nJgLck
