An article intended for practitioners of Chinese medicine:
I want to share a tip about taking herbs that helps me a lot in treating digestive problems.
Although I really like treating with Chinese herbs, for years I had difficulty giving herbs to people with irritable bowel syndrome because most of them have difficulty digesting the herbs.
The plants would cause them bloating and stomach discomfort, which negated the whole idea of treating their digestive problems with plants.
What solved this issue for me was a tip I received from a lovely Chinese medicine practitioner: Dr. Dorit Parnas, who recommended that I significantly reduce the dosage of the herbs for those with sensitive intestines and increase it gradually only if possible.
I ask patients to take 2 grams of powder per day (a third of the original amount per day) and after 5 days increase to 4 grams per day. This way the body gradually gets used to the plants.
If after another 5 days the patient can increase to 6 grams per day (the desired amount), I instruct him to increase the dosage, and if I see that he is having a hard time with 6 grams per day, I return him to 4 grams.
It's interesting to see that I see difficulty in taking herbs mainly in people with sensitive intestines and much, much less in Crohn's and colitis, which makes me think that sensitive intestines are more related to a weak spleen, while Crohn's/colitis, which sometimes manifests itself in the same symptoms as sensitive intestines, are caused by another "Chinese" imbalance.
