Adult reflux is most often expressed as heartburn and occurs in adults (as opposed to infant reflux, which occurs in toddlers). Adult reflux occurs when there is a disruption in the normal functioning of the sphincter responsible for separating the stomach from the esophagus.
During swallowing, the sphincter's role is to ensure that gastric juices do not rise towards the esophagus. If gastric juices rise into the esophagus, a burning sensation may occur - that is, heartburn.
There are several causes of adult reflux, including: obesity, diabetes, hiatal hernia, smoking, drinking a lot of alcoholic beverages, and more.
It is highly recommended to avoid consuming various foods that can increase reflux, such as:
citrus fruit juices, chocolate, caffeine, onions, spicy foods, very spicy or fatty foods, and more. There are different levels of reflux: from mild heartburn to severe heartburn.
Those suffering from severe heartburn may have a significant impact on their quality of life.
Reflux may cause or manifest as: cough, hoarseness, tooth damage, chest pain, or bad breath.

Reflux will usually not go away on its own unless it is treated with lifestyle changes/medication or complementary medicine.
In Chinese medicine, reflux can be treated by combining herbal treatment, acupuncture, and proper nutrition. In acupuncture, specific points that affect the stomach and esophagus are pricked. If no significant change is achieved within three or four treatments, herbal treatment is usually added.
Reflux in children can also be treated with natural treatment without acupuncture, but by pressing acupuncture points - a treatment that is not painful at all and is very effective.
